Keith Wayne Montag, born June 10, 1955, in Portland, Oregon passed away on August 8, 2024, in Portland from complications related to diabetes.
Public visitation will be held, Wednesday, August 14th from 1 -5 pm at Bateman Carroll Funeral home, 520 W. Powell Blvd, Gresham, Oregon followed by private family burial and military honors at Willamette National Cemetery.
Keith was the second born child of Mickey Charles Montag and Ramona Caroline Francis. He lived with his family in the Gladstone area until his middle school years when his parents divorced. He moved to Rhode Island with his mother and sister, before returning to live with his father. He attended high school in Gladstone then graduated from West Linn High School in 1973. After many years away from the classroom he attended Mt. Hood Community College, earning an associates degree in 2000.
Keith joined the Navy in 1976, serving four years on the U.S.S. Flint, an ammunition ship stationed in the Pacific. In 1984, shortly after meeting his wife, Sarah, he reenlisted in the. Navy, this time being assigned to the reserve center attached to NAS Miramar in San Diego. While in San Diego, Keith and Sarah married and became parents to their daughter Kate. In 1988 the family relocated to Oak Harbor, on Whidbey Island, Washington, where Keith finished his time in the Navy.
The family moved back home, to Portland, in 1989. Keith took advantage of the opportunity to become a “stay at home dad” before returning to work outside the home. He had a love of music and was always excited when a favorite artist released something new. As Kate grew up, he shared his love of music with her and found immense joy in discovering their shared music tastes. Keith also loved being in the outdoors and loved nothing more than camping - as long as there was water to swim in and a big campfire to sit by.
Keith worked at Tower Records and Music Millennium, Home Base and Home Depot before joining the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT). He retired from ODOT in September 2020. Retiring during a pandemic meant that Keith spent a lot of time away from others and being less active. It wasn’t too long before his medical issues worsened and began impacting his quality of life. In early March 2024, Keith was admitted to the hospital; from there he transferred to a skilled nursing nursing facility until again being admitted to the hospital in mid July, where he passed away.
Keith is preceded in death by his parents, his mother-in-law and father-in-law (Olga Maria Moilanen and William Henry Styles, Jr.), and two brothers-in-law (Michael Styles and Bruce Styles). He is survived by his wife Sarah, daughter Kate Lee (Corey), sister Linda Alberg, sisters-in-law Yvonne Higgins (Calvin), Eileen Lovegren, Rebecca DeGrazia, Linda Sharp, Renee Styles, Liisa Styles Bowers (Brian), and numerous nieces and nephews.
