

Leslie Elmer Hoyle was born in apple blossom country. Born in 1934 to Willard and Pearl Hoyle of Wenatchee, Washington. Leslie joined his older brothers, Richard and Rodney, harvesting apples in the family orchard on Western Ave. Leslie enjoyed the outdoors, music, sports and church with his family. After graduating from Wenatchee High School, Leslie earned his B.A. degree at Northwest Nazarene College in Nampa, Idaho and met his future bride, Carolyn Rust of Myrtle Creek, Oregon.
In 1957, Leslie and Carolyn were married and moved to Corvallis, Oregon where he achieved an
M.A. in Education at Oregon State University. They were soon joined by two children, Rochelle and Eric. After his first year of teaching at Corbett High School, Leslie went on to teach science and eventually head of the science department at Reynolds High School in Troutdale. In addition to teaching, Les coached the ski team and led the aviation club. During the summer months, Les worked for the US Forest Service as a technician mapping out diseased trees from aircraft in the North Cascades. Portland First Church of the Nazarene was the center of their family activity when not outdoors, hiking, camping and skiing. An accomplished vocalist, Les served the Lord for many years traveling and recording music with the gospel group the New Life Singers.
Following Les’s retirement in 1989 he went on to work as a part-time computer instructor with Mt. Hood Community College. In those years, Les and Carolyn, enjoyed many adventurous RV trips around the country, as well as family trips and gatherings. They especially enjoyed numerous overseas work and witness trips where they assisted missionaries and churches with building and renovation projects. In 2015, after losing his bride of 58 years to a long illness, Leslie spent his years with his family, teaching Sunday school classes, singing in the choir, travelling to the Holy Land, the Greek Islands, Hawaii, Alaska, and making numerous trips to see friends and loved ones. Les also enjoyed caring for his property, bird watching, stargazing, and exploring the back roads of Mt. Hood with his son, Eric.
After suffering a massive stroke, Leslie peacefully joined his Savior on December 15th, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his children, Rochelle Carpenter (Paul), Eric Hoyle (Connie), seven grandchildren, Stephanie (Heath), Travis (Carolina), Courtney (Zach), Alex (Rachel), Alisha (Roger), Logan, Dylan, and nine great grandchildren, his brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Rodney and Jean Hoyle, and cherished nieces and nephews. Along with his wife, Carolyn, he was preceded in death by his brother and sister-in-law, Richard and LaRae Hoyle.
A celebration of his life will be held, Saturday, February 22nd, 1:00 pm at Nexus Church of the Nazarene, 12555 SW 22nd St., Beaverton, OR 97008.
