Lois M. Verhei-Nelson was born in Vancouver, Washington on December 19, 1920. She died at the age of 91 on January 9, 2012. Lois attended Mt. Tabor Grade School and graduated from Washington High School before marrying Ray F. Nelson in August 1939; they were married 62 years. She loved her independence and her home and lived there until October of 2011. Lois was greatly loved and respected by all who knew her-she was a very kind hearted person and a wonderful mentor. Lois led a life of quiet grace and dignity. She was primarily a mother and housewife most of her married years, caring for her husband and 3 children, later becoming a great influence in the lives of her 5 grandchildren. While Lois’ husband was in the Pacific she worked for the war effort. She worked intermittently at Janzen Knitting Mills until retiring in 1975. Lois was an avid conversationalist, loved politics and reveled in a good debate. She enjoyed playing and watching tennis, gardening, cooking and reading (she loved a good mystery). Lois couldn’t resist a good cheeseburger. She delighted in board/card games of all types, including Backgammon, and loved a good challenge. Lois also took great pleasure in reading and studying the Bible, and helping out family and friends when needed. Her favorite Bible passage was Psalm 23. Her parents Justin L. and Effie E. Verhei and siblings Lloyd R. Shannon, Doris E. Verhei, and Joyce N. Williams preceded her in death. Lois leaves her 3 children, daughter Jody Darr-Block, son-in-law Leland Block, son Fred R. Nelson, daughter-in-law Melinda Nelson, and son Eric F. Nelson. Lois also leaves 5 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and friends. We will all miss you Mom, Grandma, “Gram”, Nanna, Aunt and friend; you were the best…..ever.
A committal service will be held at Willamette National Cemetery on Tuesday January 17th at 2:00PM. Bateman Carroll Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
