Lucy Metcalf, age 96, passed away peacefully with her two adult children by her side. She was born in southern Germany and immigrated to the United States at age 8. She lived in the Chicago area for many years and it was there that she met her husband Chuck to whom she was married for over 53 years. They moved to Portland in 1949.
Lucy enjoyed a successful career as a bowling center manager in Portland’s Gateway district. Among her greatest achievements were her tenure as the President of the Greater Portland Women’s International Bowling Congress (WIBC) and her induction into the WIBC Bowling Hall of Fame. In addition to managing Gateway Lanes for over 20 years, she was a strong proponent of bowling as a recreational sport and worked diligently to encourage people to actively engage in the sport. She taught bowling lessons, organized leagues and secured team sponsors. She knew many of the local merchants on a first name basis and she created hundreds of friendships in the area through her years in the bowling industry. She always had a smile on her face and a friendly greeting for everyone she encountered.
Lucy and Chuck loved to play bridge, golf and vacation in Hawaii. They raised 3 children and were very active in their senior living community during their retirement years.
Lucy is survived by her daughter Dorothy Martin of Bellevue, WA and son Mark Metcalf of Gresham, OR. Lucy had 3 other children; Bruce Deleskiewicz of Illinois, Doris Christides of Illinois and Chuck Metcalf of Gresham, OR, all of whom preceded her in death. Lucy has 8 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren who will carry on her legacy.
A celebration of life will be held for Lucy at 2:00 PM on March 2 at Bateman Carroll Funeral Home in Gresham.
