Lynn Graham Sherwood was born July 6, 1946 and passed away February 6, 2014. She is survived by her husband, Ronald; children Robin and Emily; daughter-in-law Anne; mother Yvonne Graham; sister Patrice Hernandez; niece Kari Clawson and her grandchildren Harrison and Gisele. Born in Bremerton, Washington to Yvonne and Donald Graham, Lynn spent her childhood living in Washington, Oregon, Alabama, England, Ohio, Texas, Kansas, Bermuda and Nebraska as the daughter of an Air Force pilot. She graduated from University High School in Lincoln, Nebraska. Lynn received her bachelor’s degree from Whitman College and her master’s degree from Portland State University. Her teaching career began at Camp Zama, a United States Army Base in Sagamihara, Japan. In 1971, she married the love of her life Ron Sherwood. As the librarian at Sweetbriar Elementary School from its opening in 1974 until she retired in 1999, she shared her love of books with an entire generation of students, who still hear her voice when they read stories to their own children. A teacher at heart and by profession, Lynn understood that people learn in their own way, and she worked tirelessly to foster individual interests and talents. Her kindness, love and support were evident at all times because she showed up, cheered us on and believed in us even when we didn’t believe in ourselves. Beyond her love of books, which she carried into retirement with a regular book club, she enjoyed attending performing arts events in Portland, having tea with her girlfriends, sewing baby quilts, traveling and playing cards with her family and friends, and spoiling her grandchildren. An open house celebrating her life will be held on Wednesday, February 19, 2014 from 5:30pm to 8:30pm at Holliday Park Plaza, 1300 NE 16th Avenue in Portland, Oregon. Contributions may be made as donations to Friends of Multnomah County Library. Arrangements entrusted to Bateman Carroll Funeral Home in Gresham, Oregon.
