Marjorie Jean Sander

A public visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday, June 5th, at Bateman Carroll Funeral Home, 520 W. Powell Blvd. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 6th, also at Bateman Carroll Funeral Home. The committal ceremony will follow at 1:30 p.m. at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.

Marjorie was born on December 18, 1934, in Gresham, OR to Walter Godbey and Elva Blanche (Stephens) Cooper. In her childhood, she attended Pleasant Home Baptist and Friendly Corner Methodist churches. She graduated from Sandy High School in 1953. For the past 40 years, Marjorie and her family attended Tri-City Baptist Temple in Gladstone OR.

Marjorie's oldest daughter, Valerie, was born in 1958. Following Valerie's father's death, Marjorie married Martin Sander on October 28, 1961. As the wife of an Air Force captain, Marjorie learned to be content wherever they lived. She was a member of the Grange, Order of the Eastern Star, and Rainbow for Girls. Marjorie was also on multiple bowling leagues, was a Girl Scout leader, and was a life-long quilter. Being a mother and grandmother were among her greatest joys in life. She was involved in many activities with her children, including starting a business (MarVal Specialties) and showing cats with Valerie, watching Bryan play PeeWee baseball, and making the clothes for and traveling with Greg and Kolleen while they were ice skating. She supported her children and grandchildren in their endeavors and always kept up with what was going on with them. Marjorie was also very involved in her church and was a strong supporter of missions and youth programs, even going on missions trips to Mexico and Guatemala.

In addition to MarVal Specialties, Marjorie held a variety of jobs. Some of her most notable include summer fruit picking jobs, being a medical assistant to Dr. Chamberlain in Gresham, and teaching as a P.E. teacher and 4th grade substitute. Marjorie also ran an in-home childcare, worked as a caterer, and held various commercial food prep positions. Following retirement, she and Martin founded the quilting ministry at Tri-City.

Marjorie was predeceased by her husband, Martin; parents, Walter and Elva; brothers Guy, Walter, Ellis, Edward, David, Norman, and Ronald Cooper; and sister, Evelyn Kless.

She is survived by her children, Valerie (Dunn) Arthurs of Gresham, OR, Bryan Sander of Corvallis, OR, Greg (Lynnette) Sander of Gresham, OR, and Kolleen (Fred) Clayton of Aurora, OR; sister Geraldine Glenn of Gresham, OR; brother Nick Cooper of Abu Dhabi, UAE; grandchildren Mariah, Marty (Lydia), Dakota, Brittany, Serena, Douglas (Katie), Timothy, Keilah, Attalia, and Ethan; and great grandchildren Jeremiah, Nathaniel, Sophia, Gideon, and Wyatt.
