Melvin Henry Iverson

4, 1921, in Portland, Oregon, to his parents; Elias and Augusta (Akse) Iverson. Mel graduated

from Astoria High School, he served in the United States Navy, from 1942 - 1945. During Mel’s

time in the Navy, he received the American Area Campaign Medal, the Good Conduct Medal,

the Philippine Liberation Medal 1 Star, and the Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign Medal, 4 stars.

After his service in the United States Navy, Mel attended the University of Washington,where

he graduated with a Bachelors in Business Administration in 1950. He served in the United

States Army from 1951-1952.

Mel was the proud owner of a business that imported Scandinavian items and furniture. He

was an active member of the Scandinavian community in Portland, where he belonged to a

variety of groups including Nobel and Harmonie Lodges, Sons of Norway, New Sweden,

Scandinavian Heritage Foundation, which included being a part of the Founder’s Club. Mel was

named Scandinavian of the Year in 1987. He was active member of various Lutheran Churches

in Portland. He enjoyed a good cup of coffee and spending time with family and friends.

In 2000, Mel married his wife Alice, and they resided in Portland for several years before

moving to the Coast.

Mel was preceded in death by his parents; Elias and Augusta, his sister, Margaret and brother,

Norman. Mel is survived by his wife; Alice Kienberger-Iverson; his nephews; Don (Molly)

Hughes, and Scott (Corina) Hughes; and his six step children; Jon, Stephan (Kristi), Paul

(Traci), Timothy (Angela), Annette (Kevin Kahl), and Kristine Kienberger; 6 grandchildren,and

a number of cousins. He will be missed by many family and friends.

A Memorial Service will be held on May 23rd, 2015, at 2:00 p.m. at Resurrection Lutheran

Church, 1700 NE 132nd Ave., Portland.
