Rick was born on August 17, 1973 to Dan and Lois Doyle in Portland, Oregon. He graduated Sam Barlow High School in 1991 and went on to attend the University of Southern California. Rick loved all things USC! After 2 years at USC, Rick attended Southern Oregon State College where he graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree. He also earned a Master’s Degree from Portland State.
Rick used his degrees to make a difference in the lives of students. He taught Advanced Mathematics and Computer Science in Estacada, Lake Oswego, Centennial and Parkrose. While in those schools he was also often found on the baseball field coaching or supporting the teams.
In 2006, Rick left teaching to ultimately become a Systems/Network Administrator for Parkrose School District. Rick was a dedicated and cherished member of the Parkrose community, known for his expertise and unwavering willingness to assist others. He was deeply passionate about his work, particularly in supporting the union. Rick faithfully served as the Classified Union President for over 10 years. His contributions to the district were countless, and he will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of working alongside him.
Rick was an avid sports fan, playing Softball up until his cancer diagnosis in 2023. He played football all 4 years of high school at Sam Barlow. In college he could always be found on intramural teams. When he wasn’t playing, he was watching! He loved to go to professional sporting events, watch college games and support the high school sports programs as well.
Rick loved traveling! Wherever he went he would check out local breweries, wineries or local fare. He was always ready for the next adventure.
On May 28, 2023, Rick was diagnosed with cancer. Through testing and diagnosis, it was eventually determined that he had Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Unfortunately, the statistics of survival are not good. The chemotherapy put him in a state of temporary remission where he was able to spend time with family, travel to a USC and Seahawk game, make a few trips to the beach and attend a few Mariners games. There was so much more he wanted to do but the cancer was too powerful.
Rick is survived by his mom, Lois Doyle Smith, stepfather, Stephen Smith, sister, Angi (Chip) Nicholas, nephews, Chad (Catie) and Oliver, niece, Mackenzie and an Aunt, Uncles and cousins. Rick was preceded in death by his father, Dan Doyle.
