Russell was born to proud parents Harvey Alfred Shatter and Ella Oline Hartland in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on April 20, 1944. Tragically, Russell's father died while Russell was just a toddler. Ella married Leonard Lindblad in 1947 and the family farmed near Alcester, South Dakota. In 1948, Russell gained a little brother, Darrel, and they all moved the family farm near Fairview, South Dakota. Farming on 280 acres of land that produced corn, oats, hay and all the animals familiar to farm life - dairy cattle, hogs, sheep and many loyal farm dogs and cats! Russell (Russ) was responsible for helping Mom and Dad with all of the chores needed on the farms.
In 1960, the family made the decision to move to Oregon to be near relatives that lived in the Gresham area. Russ graduated from Gresham High School, did many part time jobs, then joined the U.S. Army. He trained in the ASA (Army Security Agency) and served his enlistment in West Germany. He attained the rank of SP5 (E-5) and was honorably discharged at the end of his enlistment.
A "civilian" again, he returned to live in Beaverton, Oregon and started working at Tektronix, the world's largest and most respected company that manufactured scientific measuring equipment, especially oscilloscopes. Russ was a bench and test technician, calibrating the equipment prior to shipment to companies around the world. Russ worked at Tektronix for 40 years!
During retirement, Russ loved photography using film, 35mm as well as large format, developing most in his darkroom. Later, he started digital format photography as well, but preferred film.
As health problems began limiting his mobility, he went back to his old hobby of coin collecting. Russ also always loved watching TV programs. His favorite movies were westerns with John Wayne, and World War II films with 1940's and 1950's Hollywood stars.
Russ, a man of honesty and integrity, a life well lived. I will miss him greatly.
Look to this day.
Yesterday is already a dream
and tomorrow is only a vision...
But today, well lived,
makes every yesterday a dream
of happiness and every tomorrow
a vision of hope.
I am not afraid
to face tomorrow,
for I have seen yesterday
and I love today.
