Sherman was born on May 1, 1925 in Perry, Oklahoma to Sherman and Josephine Timmons. He attended high school in Perry, Oklahoma where he met the love of his life, Sybil Harshaw. During World War 2, he moved to Oregon so that he could work in the shipyards. Sherman and Sybil were married on July 27, 1945 in Vancouver, Washington.

He took great pride in his yard and home, and could often be found doing yard work. He was very friendly with his neighbors and was always available to lend a helping hand. He also had a soft spot for the homeless cats in his neighborhood.
