Shirley Doreen Rognle, 87 of Gresham, Oregon, passed away on March 6th 2019 with family by her side. Shirley was born August 11th, 1931 to Colin and Frances Marks in Tacoma, Washington. She was the second born of three children. Shirley in her childhood enjoyed riding her horse on the family farm and all things outdoors. As a member of the Campfire Girls, one of her fondest memories was her time spent at Camp Namanu in Sandy, Oregon. She grew up in the Portland area and graduated from Parkrose High School in 1949. At the time, she worked at Jim Dandy’s Drive-in on Sandy Blvd. where she met and then married Ed Rognle on March 17th 1950. They lived in St. Paul, Minnesota for a short time for Ed’s military service. Then moved back to Portland to start a family, where they raised 4 children. Shirley was a homemaker for years, before going to work, 50 yards away from her back door at Centennial High School, as a teacher’s assistant in the math department where she worked and retired from after 20 years. There was a Rognle child at Centennial from 1969 through 1980. Shirley was honored for her 20 years of support and service to the Athletic programs at the high school, as she volunteered her time for many sporting events even before she had children involved there. Shirley enjoyed gardening, crafting, and playing rummy tile with her grandchildren. She was quite a gamer! Ed and Shirley were snowbirds for 20 years after retiring and during this time made many new friends.
Shirley is survived by her children; Jan and Brad Plancich, Susan Rowland, Julie and Randy Irwin, Foster-son, Kelly Githens. Grandsons; Nicholas South, Erik Salyer, Granddaughters; Dara Wolcott, Kellie and Kerry Irwin, Andrea Salyer, Amanda and Stephanie Chisum, Great-Grandchildren; Ava Ferraro, Giana, Isaiah, Josiah & Malachi Wolcott.
