

Mr. Jennings, born in Griffin on July 24, 1917 was known to his friends and family as J.P. He attended Rushton School Fourth Ward, Sam Bailey, Griffin High School and Georgia Tech. He was baptized by Dr. Jim Turner in 1936 into Griffin First Baptist Church where he was a charter member of Bramblett Sunday School Class, later Bob Cheatham Sunday School Class as treasurer; usher for the 8:45 and 11:00 a.m. church services; addressed all church bulletins for approximately 3 years and for several years was a member of the church counting committee. Mr. Jennings loved to fish, talk on his Ham Radio and collect old photos and old news stories concerning the history of Griffin as historian for the G-S Historical Society and the Griffin American Legion Post 15 for over 50 years. He was past Exalted Ruler of Griffin Elks Lodge #1207 with 58 years of service; 3 years of ROTC training, 2 years with the Georgia National Guards and army Reserve and 3 years with 4525th A.T.C. with U.S. Air Force during WWII. Mr. Jennings was preceded in death by his parents, John Payne & Mattie Crane Jennings and wife, Kathleen Leonhart Jennings.
Survivors include niece & nephew, Vickie & Troy Evans of Orchard Hill and Tommy & Margaret Lenhart of Barnesville; great-niece, Kathleen Evans; great-nephews, Michael & Megan Lenhart, David Evans and Allen Evans; great-great-niece, Braelyn Lenhart and great-great-nephew, Thomas Lenhart.
Funeral services for Mr. John P. Jennings, Jr. will be held Tuesday, November 8, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Haisten McCullough Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. Friends may visit the family 2 hours prior to the service.
