

Sara Lewis Smith, 92, passed away December 15. Born January 30, 1918, in Cartersville, Georgia, she was the daughter of John Baylis Lewis and Sara Pearle Lewis. She graduated from Cartersville High School and received her Bachelor of Arts in speech from Shorter College in Rome, Georgia, in 1939. She married Charles Leavell Smith, Jr., in 1940. They were married until his death in 2001. They had two daughters: Sara Lewis and Charlotte Jon.
Mrs. Smith lived in Griffin, Georgia, for fifty-six years, where she was an active member of St. George’s Episcopal Church, the Griffin Utility Club, the Garden Club of Griffin, and several bridge groups. She and her husband, Charlie, enjoyed traveling and often combined her love of seeing the world’s sights with his love of being on the water. In 2006 she moved to Canterbury Court in Atlanta, where the staff provided kind and loving care.
She is survived by her two daughters and their husbands: Sara Smith Nolan and Tom of Mooresville, North Carolina, and Charlotte Smith Pfeiffer and Guy (“Pete”) of Decatur, Georgia; two grandchildren and their spouses: Michael James Grode, Jr. (“Jim”) and Julie Mayfield of Ashville, North Carolina, and Patricia Grode and Gregory Addicks of Dunwoody, Georgia; and two great grandsons: Michael Reinhardt and Charles Burton Addicks of Dunwoody. Her husband and a son-in-law, Michael James Grode, preceded her in death.
A graveside service will be held at Oak Hill Cemetery in Griffin, Georgia, on December 26, 2010, at 2 p.m. The Reverend Claire Arnold Yoder will officiate. Prior to the service the family will receive friends from 1 until 1:45 p.m. at Haisten-McCullough Funeral Home in Griffin.
