Winifred M. Garrett, age 84 passed away peacefully at Wellstar Spalding Regional Hospital in Griffin, GA on July 30, 2017 surrounded by her children. Winnie was born in Darwen, Lancashire in Northern England to John and Mary Bury. She attended St Joseph Catholic School and at 15 left to help support the family with her brother John and sisters Joan and Margaret. She met her future “Yankee” husband Jack while on holiday in southern England and soon thereafter moved to the United States to become a young military wife.
As the family grew to include Preston, Kim and Susan, she shuffled her Airforce military family around the US and England to finally settle in Griffin, GA. Winnie was an active member of the VFW auxiliary, Post 5448 where her favorite past time was shooting darts and supporting any activity hosted by the VFW. She attended the VFW regularly until a few weeks before her passing. Winnie enjoyed knitting, reading adventure and suspense novels, watching Judge Judy/Joe Brown and was learning to use the computer and even Facebook. Although Winnie spent most of her life in the United States, her heart was back home in England. Her family will fulfill her wish to spread some of her ashes on the moors and at the grave of her parents in Darwen.
Winnie is survived by her children, Preston Garrett of Griffin, GA; Kim and Susan Garrett of McDonough, GA; brother Les Bury of Melton Mowbray, England, grandchildren Taylor and Andrew Garrett and great granddaughter Ava Garrett. She is preceded in death by husband Jack Garrett, Grandson Garrett Rodriguez, sisters Joan Naughton and Margaret Walsh and brother John.
