Betty (Wood) Smith, 92, passed away peacefully on January 3, 2023. She is survived by her daughter, Lucille Hershey (Joseph), her grandson, Christopher, and many nieces and nephews. Betty is also survived by her favorite granddog, Buddy. Betty is preceded in death by her loving husband, Leroy Smith, her parents, Leancy and Naomi Wood of Lawton, WV, her two brothers, Leancy Rupert Wood Jr. (Helen) and George Wood (Helen “Allene”), and her one sister, Virginia Nell Pomeroy (Kenneth).

Betty was born the youngest of four children in a small coal mining town on Greenwood Mountain, located near Lawton, WV. She loved her family dearly and left school to help take care of her father and the household after her mother’s passing in 1946. Around this time, a young coalminer by the name of Leroy Smith would steal her heart. Betty and Leroy were married on January 13, 1951, before Leroy would serve his country in Korea. Upon his return, Betty and Leroy left West Virginia and moved to Detroit, MI where, in 1961, Betty gave birth to her daughter, Christiann Lucille Smith. Betty’s love for family and life led her and Leroy to make their final move to a beautiful little house in Grosse Pointe Woods where Betty was able to stay until her passing. She turned that house into a home, where she loved and cared for her husband, raised her daughter to be successful, and took care of her father until his passing in 1968. She hosted many family gatherings throughout the years where she loved to cook, eat, and laugh. Even at 92, Betty looked forward to going out to eat, getting her hair and nails done, and attending parties. She will be missed dearly by her family, most especially by her daughter, Lucy, who went above and beyond to take care of her mom and the household, just as Betty did before.

Visitation will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 5 at A. H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack Ave, Grosse Pointe Woods, MI 48236. A funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, January 6 at the chapel at A. H. Peters Funeral Home , 20705 Mack Ave at Vernier Road , Grosse Pointe Woods.

A graveside burial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 7 at Christian Memorial Gardens West, 521 East Hamlin Road, Rochester Hills, MI 48307.
