Byron Daugherty Cooper

Byron Daugherty Cooper, 73, of Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan, died August 13, 2018, at his home. He was born to the late Ivan and Janet (Daugherty) Cooper on July 13, 1945 in Wabash, Indiana. He was predeceased by his son Richard, parents, and his sister Melissa Cooper. He is survived by his wife Deborah and their children, Liz (Micah) of Chicago and Andrew (Alison) of East Boston, Mass., his brother, Tony Cooper (Jeanie) and his nieces, Carrie Brunson (Andrew) and Candice McCoart (Aaron) and their families. Byron was a scholar and teacher. He earned several degrees from Indiana University, including his Juris Doctor, in 1978. He taught Latin, Economics and Humanities in Indianapolis before shifting his studies and subsequent career to Law Librarianship at Indiana University and the University of Detroit Mercy. While at the Law School, he served as Library Director and found his keenest interest in teaching Property Law. Upon his retirement in 2011, he was honored to be named Professor Emeritus. In retirement, he continued his lifelong scholarship by learning a new language, French. He attended classes at the Alliance Franaise locally and read -in French- the works of French philosophers, historians, and mathematicians. He had planned to conclude his studies by attending a month-long course in French at Alliance Franaise in Paris. His death came just two weeks before his scheduled departure. Byron took great pleasure in traveling to Rome, London and Paris with his family. The memories of those trips were among his fondest. Funeral services will be held at St. Michaels Episcopal Church in Grosse Pointe Woods on Saturday, August 25 at 1:00 pm, followed by a luncheon and fellowship in the Parish Hall. Interment will be at Falls Cemetery in Wabash, Indiana on August 28 at 2:00 pm.
