

Elmer J. Dold, age 94, died peacefully at his home on June 25, 2014. He was born in Belleville, Illinois on April 18, 1920, the son of Frank and Magdalena Dold. Elmer graduated at age 16 from Cass Technological High School in Detroit and began his career as a jewelry designer/maker at the Ray Fanslaw Jewelry Manufacturing Company in Detroit. Elmer served his country in the U. S. Army from January 1942 until he was discharged in December 1945. He attained the rank of Sergeant and was deployed in New Guinea, the Southern Philippines and Luzon. In 1946, Elmer married Rosemary Langlois at Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church in Detroit. In 1954 he began working for General Motors at the Cadillac Plant as a machinist. He retired from GM in 1982 as a foreman for process development at the GM Tech Center in Warren. Elmer enjoyed his family and was a doting father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He had a very creative mind and enjoyed photography, woodworking, jewelry design and was an accomplished violin musician. He was a devout Catholic and was actively involved at St. David Church in Detroit as an altar server, church choir member, parish council member, and booster club member. Later at St. Jude Church he was a money counter, altar server for funerals and made donuts for the coffee receptions after Sunday masses. Elmer is survived by his children; Barbara Sperl (James), Thomas (Janet), Nancy Rudd, Kathleen Westberg, Ronald (Brenda), Keith and Mary Ellen Zelenak (Joseph); 13 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; his sister, Dorothy Lusch and his brother, Ralph Dold. He was predeceased by his wife Rosemary in 2002 and his brother Edward Dold. Visitation will be held from 2:00 to 9:00 pm Sunday at the A. H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack Avenue at Vernier Road in Grosse Pointe Woods. A scripture service will begin at 7 pm Sunday evening. On Monday, Elmer will lie instate at St. Jude Catholic Church, 15879 E. Seven Mile, Detroit from 9:30 am until mass begins at 10 am. Rev. Fr. Shafique Masih will officiate. Interment will follow Sacred Heart Cemetery in Roseville with US Army Honors. The family has suggested that memorials be directed to the St. Jude Food Pantry, c/o St. Jude Catholic Church, 15879 E. Seven Mile, Detroit, MI 48205.
