Emily Ann Guarini, 98, of Grosse Pointe Farms, MI passed away on March 12, 2021. Beloved wife of Stefano, whose passing preceded her own. Dearest mother of John (Lisa) and Steven (Renee). Proud grandmother to Anthony, Alexandra, and the late Steven. Survived by her brother Joe (Penny) and preceded in death by her 11 siblings Agnes, Catherine, Phillip, Peter, Anne, Edward, Lorraine, Paul, Theodore, Rita Barker, and Kenneth. Emily also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews.
Emily was born in 1923 in Detroit. The experience of having very little early in life instilled a determination in her to get ahead and to always be self-sufficient. She went to work as a secretary at the GM Tech Center at a young age and stayed for nearly 20 years until she had her children. She managed real estate later.
Emily liked to sew, but her passion was running. She started in her 50’s and could be seen running on Grosse Pointe Boulevard every day, rain or shine. She participated in various 5k races and won her age group in several. Emily was featured twice in the Grosse Pointe News for her running, and people would often stop her around town and tell her that she was an inspiration to them. She loved that people recognized her and was so proud to tell them how she would run 5-7 miles every day. Her running turned into walking as she got older, but she continued every day up until her early 90’s.
Although she looked forward to regular visits from her sons, Emily was fiercely independent and lived on her own up until age 97. She was blessed with good health, and she amazed anyone who heard that she didn’t take a single medication and had no formal medical history.
Viewing will take place at A.H. Peters Funeral Home on Mack in Grosse Pointe Woods on Monday, March 22, 2021 from 4-8 p.m., with a rosary at 7pm. A mass will be said on Tuesday March 23, 2021 at noon at St. Paul on the Lake Church in Grosse Pointe Farms. Emily’s cremated remains will be inurned at the St. Paul Church columbarium next to her beloved husband Stefano, and near her beloved grandson, Steven.
