George V. Mason

George V. Mason, age 82 died peacefully on December 22, 2010 at St. John Hospital Macomb in Warren, MI. George was born on January 26, 1928 in Detroit, the son of George V. Sr. and Hilda Mason. He attended University of Detroit Jesuit High School. After high school, George became a carpenter and was self employed as a rough and finish carpenter for several years. He also was employed by the City of Detroit in the waste water treatment plant and eventually worked again as a carpenter for the City of Detroit. In 1980 he was forced into an early retirement due to heath reasons. In 1951 George married Dolores Dixon. After retirement, they moved to Fort Pierce, Florida. Dolores died last year and George returned to Michigan in July of 2010. Mr. Mason was very proud of his Irish heritage. His humor and wit were fitting characteristics of that heritage. He was often heard saying, "Never a lie, always a story." Storytelling was one of his hobbies along with hunting, fishing, camping, reading, and putzing around. He was an outdoors man and served as a scoutmaster when his sons were in Boy Scouts. George was a devout Catholic and a member of the Knights of Columbus in Atlanta, Michigan. George is survived by his four children; Patrick (Phyllis), Daniel (Cheryl), Cindy Nicholson (Jim) and Michael; six grandchildren, Matthew, Adam, Melissa and Jessica Mason and Jacob and Corey Nicholson; and siblings Ann Marie Sera and Maureen McFarland. He was predeceased by his wife Dolores and four brothers, John, Patrick, Terrence and Bernard. A memorial mass will be said at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, December 30, 2010 at St. Isaac Jogues Catholic Church, 21120 Madison, St. Clair Shores with Rev. Fr. James Lopez officiating. The family will begin receiving friends after 9:30 a.m. at the church. Memorials to the Special Olympics (1133 19th Street NW, 12th Floor, Washington, DC 20036) would be appreciated.
