

John Edward (Ed) Haug, aged 95, passed away on May 27, 2025. He was born on June 12, 1929, to John and Antoinette Haug and was the oldest of seven children raised in Elizabeth, Illinois. Ed graduated from Hanover High School in 1949 and subsequently earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from the University of Illinois in 1955. He served with distinction in the U.S. Army from July 1952 to July 1954 and was stationed in Germany during the Korean War. After completing his academic studies, Ed relocated to Detroit, and married Patricia Jean Chew on April 12, 1958.
Ed built a distinguished career as an automotive engineer with The Budd Company’s Wheel and Brake Division. His innovative work led to two U.S. patents: one for a Brake Release Mechanism and another for a Reinforced Wheel Rim.
Ed was a dedicated member of St. Michael's Episcopal Church from 1958 until his passing, living a life deeply rooted in faith. He served in various roles at the church including Sunday School teacher, Vestry member, Lay Eucharistic Minister, and Lector. Ed demonstrated a strong commitment to his community through extensive volunteer work in schools where he held numerous leadership positions and provided tutoring services. His civic engagement extended to supporting neighborhood recycling initiatives and garden programs.
Ed was an active member of the Society of Automotive Engineers, the Tire and Rim Association, the Grosse Pointe Garden Club, and the Senior Men's Club of Grosse Pointe. His hobbies encompassed folk dancing, playing bridge, completing puzzles, gardening, reading books, watching sports (especially the Illini), bowling, and golfing.
Ed is lovingly remembered by his daughters, Martha, Mary, and Barbara; grandchildren, Timothy and Karen (Kyle); great-granddaughter, Kinsley; siblings, Jacqueline, Carolyn and Thomas; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Patricia; son, Lawrence; sisters, Louise and Mary; brother, Bob; and son-in-law, Lee.
Memorial visitation with the family is scheduled on Friday, June 6 from 5-8pm at A.H. Peter’s Funeral Home, 20705 Mack Ave, Grosse Pointe Woods, MI.
A memorial service will be held at St. Michael's Episcopal Church, 20475 Sunningdale Park, Grosse Pointe Woods, MI, at 11:00am, followed by a luncheon.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Crossroads of Michigan or the Parkinson’s Foundation.
Ed will be remembered for his sharp mind, kind heart, deep faith, and unwavering dedication to family and community. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him.
