John Daniel Twomey passed away December 16, 2015 at the Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit at the age of 68. He was born April 11th 1947 in Detroit to Joseph and Dolores Towmey. He was extremely proud of his Irish heritage. John was drafted in 1967 in the U.S. Army, and proudly served his country in Vietnam. He later worked for the Wayne State University Press, and just retired in September. Growing up in Detroit, John loved Motown music. He took every opportunity to see live Motown music with his family. His signature dance move was the Temptations roll. John was a very social and a fun loving guy, he was the ultimate visitor, and a great conversationalist. Sports were a huge part of John's life; he loved the Tigers, and the Lions. Officiating football, basketball, and softball was one of his favored activities. Meeting players, coaches and referees brightened his life and connected him with some lifelong friends. In addition to officiating, John also coached youth sports in his community as well as his own family. Football, baseball, and softball were some of his favorites to coach. He also loved golfing with his son Danny. He followed the University of Michigan to the 1987 Rosebowl with his dear friend Moe, but has since been converted to a Spartan fan by his brother Joe and son-in-law Chace. He also loved the Servite Panthers (Class of '65 with his best friend Kenny Semelsberger). Family was everything to John. His children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, cousins and a large network of friends were the light of his life. John never missed a sporting event or activity his grandchildren were in, and was very active in their everyday lives. His companion Marge helped keep him young. The couple never missed their date night. They enjoyed vacationing in Florida and seeing the Tigers spring training. He was a great man who has provided much inspiration to many people through his efforts both on and off the field. He had an infectious laugh and his smile will never be forgotten. He was so full of life and he will forever be a part of us. John is survived by his children Elizabeth Twomey Wakefield (Chace), and Daniel John Twomey and by his grandchildren Addison and Sam. He also leaves behind his siblings Thomas, Kathleen Ciaramitaro (Salvatore), and Margaret Gatliff (Anthony). His Loving companion Marge Green. John is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews and friends. Visitation will be Sunday 2:00 8:00 pm at A.H.
