The World of Joyce Martin Miller February 4, 1919 January 10, 2015 Through the eyes of Gayle Miller A shy female, Joyce was born to a strong family full of sisters. She, a bright student graduated from Eastern High School in Detroit Michigan at a time when many young people did not achieve that level of education. Her first job was in retail at a local drug store chain. In 1939 she married a fun loving outgoing man she had known since her early teens, Walter (Jake) Miller. Both Joyce and Jake worked for the World War II effort, Joyce at Briggs and Jake in the US Navy. In the very early 1940's they bought their first home on Washtenaw in what was then Gratiot Township. Seventy some years later Joyce still lived on that street, a different block than the original house and the area is now Harper Woods. Joyce was pre-deceased by her spouse Walter in 1982. They shared a very active social life and maintain friendships from their youth through clubs, cards, sports and just being generous fun people to be with. An avid reader, an awesome baker, a creative individual, her magical fingers designed hats, which every woman needed for many years on Sunday for church. A stay at home mother from the 40's until the mid 60's. She and Walter raised educated and instilled values to their five children: Nancy, Gayle, James, Donald and Denise. She was known to share her philosophies "You are better than no one and no one is better than you", "You can't play until all your work is finished". Her five children brought to the Miller Family ten grandchildren: Maureen, Stephen, Karen, Michael, Kristin, Martin, Russell, James A, Justin & Paige. And, those ten grandchildren have blessed Joyce with twelve great-grandchildren: Bryan, Garrett, Samantha, Shane, Miranda, Cori, Andre, Brandon, Ian, Erin, Carson and Mila. In the mid 1960's Joyce reentered the job market once again in the retail field; first in jewelry and than in sporting goods. She retired in the mid 1980's. For the past 30 some years her world was full with her home, her family and friends.
