Katherine Thomas

Katherine Thomas passed away peacefully at home, with her loving family by her side, at 11:10 pm on November 20, 2015. She was 85 years old. She was born in Detroit, Michigan on June 22, 1930; daughter of James Caras and Mary Manos. Katherine married William Thomas on September 20, 1953 at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church in Detroit. They lived in Connecticut for a short time before moving to St. Clair Shores, living in the same residence ever since. Mrs. Thomas was very social and had many friends. She will be remembered for her wonderful sense of humor and wit. She was kind and thoughtful and would selflessly put others needs before her own. A family friend referred to her as "a remarkable lady; a beacon of God's love". Katherine was a great entertainer, opening her house to others for all occasions. Christmas will never be the same without her presence. Mrs. Thomas was the epitome of class and would always wear dresses wherever she went. Katherine taught ceramics and she enjoyed making ceramic items. She was an excellent cook, making fantastic meals from scratch. Katherine retired on her 59th birthday in 1989 from Wayne State University as a loan manager. She loved traveling with her husband. They would take their camper all over the United States. They upgraded from a camper, to a trailer, to a motor home over the years. They eventually bought a home in Ft. Myers, Florida nearly a decade and a half ago. Katherine's biggest love in her life was her family. She allowed her children to express their individualities growing up. She adored spending time with her grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by her husband and best friend of 62 years; William. Katherine was proud of her children Thomas James Thomas (David Duyck), Andrea Nichols, Denise Thomas (Donna Miller), and the late Maria Echols. Yia Yia will be missed by her loving grandchildren Andrew "Pasha" Miller-Thomas and Alexandra Miller-Thomas. Katherine was predeceased by her loving brother George Caras. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 3:00 until 9:00 pm at A.H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack Ave., at Vernier Rd., Grosse Pointe Woods. A Trisagion will be held at 7:00 pm. Mrs. Thomas will lie instate on Wednesday from 9:30 am until the time of the funeral at 10:00 am at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, 21800 Marter Rd., St. Clair Shores.
