With a heavy heart, we announce the passing of Larry Bernard Andrewes, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, fraternity brother, teacher, coach, and friend. Larry was born in Strathroy, Ontario, Canada, to William and Florence Andrewes and was raised in Windsor, Ontario, Canada.
A proud alumnus of W.C. Kennedy Collegiate in Windsor, Larry excelled in track and field and eventually was recruited by his mentor and lifelong friend, William Mayes, to run track for Eastern Michigan University (EMU). Larry was a letterman, held long-standing EMU and national relay records and recognized times, and earned his place in the Windsor Hall of Fame for Track and Field. At EMU, he was also a devoted Kappa Phi Alpha fraternity member, fully embracing Greek life.
While balancing his studies and track career, Larry met the love of his life, Patricia. They were married in 1966 at St. John the Baptist in Inkster, beginning a beautiful journey together. Their family grew with the arrival of their two cherished daughters, Shannon and Kari. Larry was a family man through and through—his love and dedication to his wife and daughters were unwavering. He later extended that devotion to the grandchildren who adored him, Dominick and Ryan Marie.
Larry’s career in education and athletics left a lasting impact on countless students as he served as a teacher, coach, and, later, the athletic director of the East Detroit Public School District. He significantly impacted the students he taught and the athletes he coached, and he often heard from students who had long graduated. Despite his busy schedule, he prioritized his family, frequently crossing the border to care for his loved ones in Canada. He never missed Shannon’s or Kari’s high school sporting events. He always ensured they were stocked with his homemade soups and chilis, often delivering them to their college dorms at Michigan State University.
His passions extended beyond the classroom and track. While a Canuck through and through, he was passionate about the life he created in the United States and became a naturalized American citizen in 1984. He found joy in listening and dancing to Motown music, maintaining his beautiful yard, reading, golfing, and running—even completing the Detroit Free Press Marathon twice. A devoted Detroit sports fan, Larry’s heart belonged to the Red Wings. He and Patricia traveled far and wide to cheer them on, creating cherished memories.
Larry’s kindness, dedication, and unwavering love for his family and community will never be forgotten. He was recognized wherever he went in Southeastern Michigan and beyond, and his legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew him. His spirit remains with and will forever guide those he loved.
Rest easy, beloved Larry. Your earthly race was run with strength, love, and purpose.
He is survived by his beautiful wife of 59 years, Patricia; adored children Shannon (Bryan) Carpenter and Kari (Kenneth) Martin; cherished grandchildren Ryan Marie Carpenter and Dominick Martin; dear siblings, brother David Andrewes and sister-in-law Heather Campbell; and loved nephews and nieces, Kimberly (Jay) St. Germaine, Robert Andrewes, Brent (Joanne) Andrewes, and Cori (Tano) Ferraro. Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his beloved brother, Robert Andrewes.
