

Lee Farkas passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, July 12, 2019 with her family at her side. Lee was born in Detroit on May 20, 1932. Lee was married to Steve Farkas for nearly 50 years and together they raised two daughters, Kathy and Maribeth. She earned her Bachelor's degree from Marygrove College and a Masters degree from the University of Detroit in Education. Lee began her teaching career in the East Detroit School System at Kellwood Elementary, where she taught a third and fourth grade split. Later, Lee co-founded the Preschool at St. Lucy Catholic Church in St. Clair Shores. Eventually, she went on to become a substitute teacher with South Lake, Lakeshore and Lakeview Schools. Her innovative teaching style won the hearts of many of her students. As a substitute teacher, she helped co-found the Macomb Association for Substitute Teachers (MAST). She was truly dedicated to her profession and a born teacher. In addition to her teaching career, Lee was always a force for change. She was heavily involved with her church, St. Lucys. She volunteered for Focus: HOPE, the United Farm Workers Movement, and the Democratic Party. She was a staunch believer in womens rights. Notably, Lee believed "Until every person lives in dignity, none of us will live in peace." Lee was the loving mother of Kathy (Paul) Messenger and Maribeth Farkas. She also is survived by many family members and friends. Lee is predeceased by her beloved husband Steve. Visitation for Lee will take place on Friday July 19 from 4 to 8 pm with a prayer service 7:00 pm at the A. H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack Avenue at Vernier Road, Grosse Pointe Woods 48236. In state Saturday July 20 9:30 am until time of funeral Mass 10:00 am at St. Lucy Catholic Church, 23401 E. Jefferson, St. Clair Shores 48080. Interment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery, Clinton Township. The family has requested memorial contributions in lieu of flowers be directed to The Capuchins, 1820 Mt.
