Once he became a master plasterer he worked on many of the buildings in the Metro-Detroit area to include the Detroit Institute of Art and the Detroit Opera House. Leslie was always very active and enjoyed spending time with his family. In addition to gardening, ice skating, and roller skating were some of Leslie's favorite activities. Leslie leaves behind his wife of 61 years Joan, his children Bud (Julie), Debra Townsend, Denise (Bill) Down, and Jewel Lynch. His grandchildren Sarah (Don) Henning, Elida (Jamie) Athearn, Megan (Don) Klauka, Jill (Bryan) Tate, Moriah (Kyle) Burgess, Nicole Klauka, Brandon Klauka, Brittiny Townsend, Hannah Townsend, Matthew Townsend, Ian Townsend, and Alex Down and his great-grandchildren Collin, Chase, Sophia, Sawyer, Drew, Jack, Max, Ben, Austin, Stefan, Jackson, Grayson, Ethan, David, and Serenity. Generous One of the first words that comes to mind when thinking of Grandpa Les is generosity. He always used to say "give unto others, expecting nothing in return". And he gave, and he gave, and he gave. Whether it was providing for his loving wife, taking care of his beloved children, patiently nurturing and teaching his grandchildren, or even giving a helping hand to a friend, he was always prepared to give unto others, expecting nothing in return. Grandpa was an exemplar of selfless generosity, teaching us all the valuable lesson of how to place others before ourselves. Humble Les was a man of few words, but when he spoke everyone stopped what they were doing to listen. They say wisdom is accumulated through years of life experiences, but Les taught us that wisdom comes to those who listen. Most importantly he taught us how to put others before ourselves. When many think of grandpa, they remember an extraordinary man with a beautiful humbleness. Loving It was his boundless love that brought so many people together and into his life. With a heart that was kind enough, soft enough, patient enough he watched and encouraged us with his gentle smile, a soft unspoken reminder of his unconditional love. What we can remember most is how proud he was of his family but it's us who are so very proud to call him dad, grandpa, and friend. His wisdom and values we can only hope to assimilate. His love of family, unwavering faith, and extraordinary work ethic combine to illustrate our memories. He left us with a beautiful example of how to live a beautiful life.
