It is with deep sorrow and profound love that we announce the passing of Lucille “Lu” Alteri on Friday, April 10, 2026, a remarkable woman whose warmth, generosity, and spirited love of life touched the hearts of everyone fortunate enough to know her.
Lu had a gift for people. She had a natural ability to draw others close and make them feel like family because to her, they were. She adopted families as her own, offering her time, her care, and her heart without hesitation. Her home and her circle were always open, and those who entered rarely wanted to leave.
A passionate lifelong learner, Lu attended Wayne State University, where she earned both her bachelor's and master's degrees in Education and Spanish. Her mastery of foreign language was nothing short of an art form, and she carried that gift into a distinguished career teaching Spanish in the Detroit Public School System for over 40 years. It was there that she found her greatest professional joy, and her dearest friend. Pat came into her life through the classroom, and the two became inseparable. They taught side by side, traveled the world together, and shared a friendship that was the very definition of devoted. Pat was the best friend a girl could ever ask for, and Lu returned that love in kind.
Lu's love of travel was woven into her soul. She treasured her journeys to Italy, the homeland of her family, where she served as the living bridge between the old world and the new. Her cousins Daniele and Anna were among her most cherished connections, and she stayed in close and loving contact with them, preserving ties that spanned an ocean and generations. Closer to home, Mackinac Island held a very special place in her heart. Lu was at her happiest on the water, the perfect sailing companion, always ready to set out on the lake and meet friends at the island during The Port Huron to Mackinac Race. Any boater lucky enough to have Lu aboard knew they were in wonderful company.
Lu was proud of her roots. She came from a hardworking, close-knit family, and she and her brother, the late Altero, carried that foundation with them as they pursued higher education, earned their degrees, and built meaningful careers. Their achievements were a testament to the values instilled in them from an early age.
In her quieter moments, Lu could be found tending to her garden, which she filled with the brightest, most vibrant blooms she could find. Her love of flowers and color reflected who she was: full of life, warmth, and beauty.
Lu Alteri leaves behind a legacy not measured in accolades, but in the lives she shaped, the families she embraced, and the love she gave so freely. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
She is welcomed into Heaven by her dear parents, Assuntino and Elettra Alteri; and brother, Altero Alteri. She is survived by her cherished nephew and nieces, Christopher (Noor) Alteri, and Suzan Alteri; as well as her great-nephew and niece, who were more like grandchildren to her, Joseph and Sienna.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 16, 2026, from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm, with a Scripture Service at 6:30 pm at A.H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack Ave, Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan 48236.
Lucille’s Instate will take place on April 17, 2026, at 10:00 am, followed by the Funeral Mass at 10:30 am at Our Lady Star of the Sea, 467 Fairford, Grosse Pointe Woods, MI 48236, on April 17, 2026.
