Lucilo Alcantara

LUCILO CASTILLO ALCANTARA, M.D. (“Lu”) was born July 4, 1932, in Santa Rita, Batangas, Philippines, the sixth of ten children of Baldomero Alcantara and Juana Castillo, and passed peacefully in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, in his home since 1968. Lu is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Dr. Elsa Avanceña Alcantara; sibling Consuelo Caguimbal; children Dr. Anthony Alcantara and his wife, Christine, Dianne Romanelli and her husband, Dr. Michael Romanelli, and Oscar Alcantara and his wife, Kimberly; and grandchildren Adam Alcantara, Robert Alcantara, Nathan Alcantara, Annabel Romanelli, Joseph Romanelli, Lynne Romanelli, Teresa Romanelli, Jonathon Alcantara, Lucas Alcantara, and Asher Alcantara.

Lu graduated from the University of Santo Tomas Medical School in Manila, Philippines in 1957. He came to the United States that year to begin his general surgery training in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he met his future wife, Elsa, who was also a graduate of UST and resident in internal medicine. Lu served as a senior surgeon on the staffs of North Detroit General Hospital, and Alexander Blain Memorial Hospital. Along with the love of his life and practice partner, Lu and Elsa maintained their medical practice at Conant Clinic P.C., where they cared for the health of the many families of Hamtramck for three decades.

Lu was an avid golfer who earned the name “One-Putt Lu"; a founding member and past President of the Philippine Medical Association of Michigan; and a frequent volunteer for medical missions to the Philippines, known to everyone for his abiding generosity. Papalu, his nickname in later life, loved gardening, giving stock market advice, and bragging about his grandchildren. He will be missed by family, friends and colleagues around the world.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made, in honor of the deceased, to the University of Santo Tomas Medical School Alumni, Medical Missions Fund (https://ustmaaamerica.wildapricot.org/donations).

A visitation for Lucilo will be held Friday, April 14, 2023 from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM at A. H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack Ave, Grosse Pointe Woods, MI 48236. A rosary will occur Friday, April 14, 2023 at 6:00 PM, 20705 Mack Ave, Grosse Pointe Woods, MI 48236. An instate will occur Saturday, April 15, 2023 at 9:30 AM at St. Paul on the Lake, 157 Lake Shore, Grosse Pointe Farms, MI 48236. A funeral mass will occur Saturday, April 15, 2023 at 10:00 AM at St. Paul on the Lake, 157 Lake Shore, Grosse Pointe Farms, MI 48236.
