

Martin J. Watz, Sr. died peacefully on December 23, 2011 at the Bortz Nursing Home in Warren after an extended illness. He was 91 years of age, born on September 24, 1920 in Romania, the son of Anton and Barbara Watz. When he was 3 years old, his family immigrated to the United States and eventually settled in Detroit. He was a graduate of the Wilbur Wright Trade School in Detroit with his journeyman's card as an electrician. During most of his career Martin worked for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 58 as a union electrician. He briefly owned his own company and also worked over 25 years for Maryland Electrical Company. He retired in 1982 at the age of 62. Martin was a World War II veteran who served his country overseas in the US Army from 1942 through 1945. He was a recepient of the European ribbon with two bronze stars. In 1942, before he entered the military, Martin married Vivian Duke at the Holy Name Catholic Church on Van Dyke Avenue in Detroit. They were married 69 years. Mr. Watz was a member of the Knights of Columbus Vismara Council, the American Legion and the I.B.E.W. Local 58 Retirees. He enjoyed golf, bowling and spending winters in Ruskin, Florida. Mr. Watz is survived by his wife Vivian; four children, Diane Watz-Frisinger, Martin, Jr. (Sandra), Janet Glaes (Charles) and Steven (Rhonda); seven grandchildren, Joshua Frisinger (Lydia), Melissa Watz, Jonathan Glaes (Mary), Tyler Glaes, Natalie Glaes, Steven Watz and Alexandra Watz; and two great-grandchildren, Sophia Frisinger and Hunter Glaes. A memorial mass will be celebrated at 10 o'clock on Friday, December 30 at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, 20955 Bournemouth at Harper in Harper Woods. Reverend Father William Herman will officiate. His cremated remains will be inurned at the Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, Michigan.
