Age 81
Born in Detroit on March 28, 1942, to the late Nicholas and Virginia Jarvis, Mike attended De La Salle Collegiate High School before joining the U.S. Navy, where he served first on the USS Aeolus (ARC-3) and then as a missile technician at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. After his discharge, he returned to Michigan and enrolled in Wayne State University, where he met his beloved wife, Paula. They married in 1965 and shared 58 happy years until his death on June 25, 2023.
Mike had many enthusiasms that he loved to share with friends and family members. Chief among these were his love of travel, history (especially World War II), books, dogs, fly fishing, and cooking. Given his Polish and Ukrainian background, it is not surprising that one of his favorite dishes was a Ukrainian coffee cake that he liked to bake and give away at Christmas.
Mike spent many years selling large-scale computer systems for Honeywell. He then owned Nolan & Cunnings (N & C), a freight audit and transportation management company, until his death. He was predeceased by his parents; by his sister, Marlene Zelmanski; and by his stepfather, Sterling MacDonald. He is survived by his brother, Nicholas (Geri), and by his stepbrothers, stepsisters, and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by Jon Vigliarolo and his wife, Laura, who provided indispensable support during Mike’s heart-rending battle with dementia.
Mike’s funeral service will be held Thursday, August 24, 2023, at 10 a.m. at Great Lakes National Cemetery, 4200 Belford Road, Holly, MI 48442.
