I too, met Mike through the old AOL Police Group. I am very sorry for your loss. Mike was very dedicated to the job. I never met Mike in person but have been on the boards with him for years.

I am extremely saddened to hear of the passing of Mike. He was a great guy who loved his family and friends very much. I remember the time he chased me around his backyard, caught me, picked me up, and threw me into his pool. Did I mention that I was fully clothed? LOL!! That's the fun-loving guy I will always remember. Rest in peace my buddy, rest in peace. You will never be forgotten. My prayers go out to Colleen, Mitch, Brett, and the family. Much Love, Toni

I was deeply saddened to hear of Mike's passing. We were both alums of St. Isaac Jogues and played football together at Notre Dame in '85. Mike was one year younger. Mike and I were both linemen, alternating right guards, specifically. We stood side by side that whole season, knocking each other, laughing, and having fun as teen boys often do. Boy, did he do some damage to our opposition. He was a strong, fast kid back then. Taller than most. And powerful. He used to crack jokes on the line and make us laugh all the time. Everyone loved him and everyone always remembered him. Those were fun times. I'll always remember him for his humor, hard work, and committment. I ran into him once after Notre Dame at a restaurant. We reminisced about Notre Dame, football, our crazy Coach Bob LaPoint, and life in general. We laughed for a bit and parted. All of us guys from Notre Dame will miss him. My thoughts are with his wife and children.

Dear Aunt Paulette and Family I was so sad to see that Mike had passed away. Although it has been many years since I have seen you, Mike and Cindy. I could not read read about Mike and not send you my thoughts and prayers. I'm sure that Mike and Uncle Boot's are up in heaven having one heck of a time and I am sure that Boots would have been very proud to see what wonderful Police Officer Mike had become. As I said I am sure they are having a good time but, can only imagine that Uncle Boots is also very sad to have Mike up there because it's just too soon for him to be there. I know the pain and sorrow is there for all of you and for the people who worked with Mike. The pain will never go away but it will ease.I still miss Boots everyday but the pain and sadness has eased because I will always have fonder memories of what a great guy he was and you all will have the same memories of how wonderful Mike was. Paulette, Cindy and family, I just learned of Michael's passing and am saddened to know that. Although I haven't seen Michael in many years I do remember him as a little kid in the neighborhood playing with his sister Cindy on the sidewalks. More recently whenever I thought of Michael I remember him telling me that as a school boy he once wrote an assignment about me and my career, a fond memory that will stick with me forever. I had the priviledge of working with Mike at the Detroit Police Academy. Mike was a true professional, and a kind and gentle man. Our deepest condolences to the Martel Family.

Though we never met in person, I knew Mike through a police email group that grew out of the old aol PSA bulletin board. He was always a gentleman with great and thoughtful comments. I consider him a friend and offer my deepest condolences to his family and Detroit PD.

I had many great conversations on the weekends with Mike when he would visit the Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office on his cases. He was a great guy and although I did not know him beyond a work relationship, I wished I could have and would have loved to have him as my next door neighbor! To Mike's family, Mike belonged to a law enforcement group which communicated mostly via email and with "mini meetings" I had the pleasure to know Mike through this group, and having talked to him several times privately. What a great man, and speaking with him often left you feeling much better about everything, he had that nature charm about him. I recall Mike telling our group about his first pending appearance on "The First 48" and how he make me laugh about his being camera shy (you couldn't tell by the show) Mike loved being a Homicide cop, but the job he loved more than anythign was husband and father. Mike helped make Detroit safer for a lot of good hard working people, but his biggest enjoyment was making his family happy and keeping them safe. Rest in Peace my friend, and I hope your boys know how proud of them you always will be

On behalf of the Thompkins family, we want to express our heartfelt sympathy and condolences to the Martel family. I met Mike in the early 90s when I became the Commanding Officer of the Law Enforcement and Physical Security Unit (LEPSU) for the Navy Reserve at Selfridge. Mike was THE best and brightest member of the unit. He was loyal, intelligent, a person of high ethics and integrity, and he had a great sense of humor. More importantly, he was always willing to go the extra mile for the LEPSU unit and for his fellow shipmates. There will never be another Mike Martel. Cindy, I have never met your beloved brother but remember how much love you shared for him. He was obviously a very great man through all the wonderful words being spoken about him. Colleen and Family I was in charge of Rouge Range when Mike came through the academy. Though I didn't have alot of contact with him I remember joking with him about his size and questioned if he really needed a gun. Years later I had contact with him many times while being a member of the LSA Board of Directors. I've been retired six years and will always remember him as a Good Cop and a Better Man. Retired Sgt.
