

Nikolaos Athanasiou passed away at Villa City Center in Warren on August 28, 2018 with his family by his side after a lengthy battle with Alzheimers/Dementia. He was born October 15, 1932 in Zilista, Ioannina, Greece the son of Dimitrios and Sofia Athanasiou. He married Chrysanthi Gatsonis, the love of his life, in Greece in 1956 and together they raised three children, Dimitrios and twins Olga and Theodoros. He moved to the United States in 1965. His family followed him; his son Dimitrios in 1969 and his wife and children in 1973. Nikolaos worked the majority his life as a baker and restaurant employee. He enjoyed listening and dancing to the music of his village. Always the life of the party. He was the patriarch of the family, loved talking to and spending time with his children and grandchildren. Nikolaos was a hard worker, strong minded and stubborn but above all a loving father and grandfather. Nikolaos is survived by his dear children Dimitrios, Olga (Bob) Markakis, and Theodoros (Honnye). He was the loving grandfather of Nikolaos (Celia) Athanasiou, Christos Markakis, Nikolaos Markakis, Tatiana Chrysanthi (Mallory) Athanasiou, Kleanthi Markakis, and great grandfather of Aria Athanasiou , Theo Athanasiou and Oliver Reed Athanasiou. He is predeceased by his beloved wife Chrysanthi. Visitation for Nikolaos will take place on Monday September 3 from 5 until 9 pm with a Trisagion 7 pm at the A. H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack Avenue at Vernier Road, Grosse Pointe Woods. He will lie in state Tuesday beginning at 9:30 am until time of service 10:00 am at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, 21800 Marter Road, St. Clair Shores. Committal will immediately follow at Cadillac Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
