Nina K. Volis

Nina K. Volis (nee Kastoris) who lived 104 beautiful years, passed away with her family at her side, on Sunday, May 26, 2019 at her home, in Grosse Pointe Shores, where she resided over 60 years. Born on the island of Lesbos, Greece, she and her mother, Ourania Kastoris, sailed to America in 1915 when she was just 10 months old, to join her father, Ignatius, who had left the island several months earlier to establish a home in Detroit. Nina grew up in Detroit, and married Kerr Volis when she was 19 years old. She was an active member of Assumption Greek Orthodox Church for all of her adult life. At church she was a Sunday school teacher and also president of the Senior Citizens Club serving 4 terms and was involved with fundraising and social events at the church. Nina is a life member of Philoptohos of Assumption. She loved flowers and kept a beautiful garden. Known to be a perfectionist, Nina spent countless hours tending her rock garden, roses and flower beds. She also grew beautiful orchids in her basement greenhouse and was a fabulous cookie maker. Nina's greatest passion was her extended family which she viewed as her greatest legacy. A wonderful hostess, who kept a meticulous home, devoted wife and mother, and loving grandmother, she lived her life with grace and dignity. Beloved wife of the late Kerr Volis. Loving mother of George (Chrisanthy) and Audrey (the late Nicholas) Thomas. Dear grandmother of Tania (Fernando) Borrego, Christina (Brian) Hazen, Kerri (JPaul) Dixon, George K. (Jill) Volis, Pamela (Alan) Yahanda, Karen (George) Yoo, Lisa (Michael) Cullen, Barbara (Patrick) Ghilani Nina was also blessed with 21 great-grandchildren Also preceded in death by siblings, Irene Kastoris and Gus Kastoris. Visitation Friday, May 31, 2019 from 4 PM to 8 PM with a Trisagion at 6:30 PM at the A. H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack Ave. at Vernier Rd., Grosse Pointe Woods, MI 48236. In state Saturday, June 1, 2019 at 9:30 AM until time of service 10AM at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, 21800 Marter Road, St. Clair Shores, MI 48080. Memorial contributions may be made to Assumption Greek Orthodox Church in Nina's memory. Interment Forest Lawn Cemetery, Detroit, MI
