I am sorry to hear of Pat's passing... I remember as a little girl visiting Michigan and going to the Kane gatherings... always a good time! I know that my mom, Lorraine, dearly loved those gatherings & loved Pat, he was a very special and important part of the Kane clan! Deepest condolences to the family.. you are in my prayers.

Uncle Pat, when I look back at my childhood I will always be thankful to you for including me in your summer vacations and making me feel loved and cared for. It has alway meant alot to me as you have always meant alot to me. One day we will meet again in that big campground in the sky. I love you.

Our beloved Uncle Pat has passed, and from that sad event, Im reminiscent of and comforted by the fact that he, in one way or another, has made an indelible mark on my life. As the patriarch of the Kane clan and unofficial master of ceremonies at most family events, reunions, and holiday celebrations since childhood, Uncle Pat always made an effort to be interested in my life and that of my brothers and sisters, questioning, among other things, our motivation for pursuing our various careers. Before leaving the country for a job of training teachers of English in the Middle East, I was duly interrogated by Uncle Pat about my decision to go, ending with, "Why cant you do that kind of work in a safer, nicer place like Hawaii?" When I explained that residents of Hawaii are native speakers of English, US citizens and had no need of my help, he resigned himself to my decision, put his arm around my shoulder with a gentle squeeze and told me to be careful, that I am loved, and not to be gone too long. I appreciated hearing those words from him more than he knew. Despite his dramatically Irish way of managing lifes challenges (the drink made difficult decisions easier and conversations deeper and more lively; arguments were made for the sake of argument), Uncle Pat was surprisingly analytical and artistically talented. With a discerning eye and an appreciation for detail (at my high school graduation party, he inquired whether I had a "bad eye," as I cut into my congratulatory buttercream sheet cake more diagonally than vertically), Uncle Pat created and constructed some of the most symmetrically beautiful fireplaces, footpaths, and homes with brick and mortar. However, it is only when I viewed my mothers old black and white photos of her and her siblings from the mid-1930s, I saw the sweet, sensitive face and smile of Uncle Pat as a young boy. His mothers death in 1940 irrevocably affected him and his siblings in ways we will never know. Uncle Pat tried, failed and succeeded many times over, but his intent was always good. I heard about Uncle Pat's passing last night and the memories have been flooding into my head ever since--memories that bring a smile or a laugh despite my sadness. Uncle Pat was an important presence in my life. When my family was suddenly left without a father when I was a small boy, Uncle Pat was there to let us know that he, along with the rest of the Kane clan, would always be there for my mom and her brood. Uncle Pat did not try to be a substitute dad, which was not what we wanted, but rather a friend who would teach us sports, share his brand of "Irish" humor, or treat us to exotic dishes like his famous linguini and white clam sauce. He also enjoyed a good scrap, whether that meant an all-night debate at the kitchen table on important issues of the day (e.g. what's with Michael Jackson and his one glove) or an invitation to "take it out on the grass" where he would dispense his brand of frontier justice. Uncle Pat had strong opinions but never took himself too seriously. Arguments with him were marathons--fun and often fueled by Paddy's or some other jet fuel concoction the he serve to weaken our resolve. He was more interested in having a colorful exchange than winning the argument, but I'm pretty sure he retired undefeated. Uncle Pat like to needle me mercilessly about being a professional student but in a quiet moment he would make sure I knew how proud he was of my accomplishments. I've lived away from Michigan for 25 years now but whenever I was able to get back I would look forward to seeing that big smile and those twinkling but mischievous blue eyes, which I knew were somewhere behind what may have been the worlds largest pair of sun glasses. I was glad my boys were able to meet and get to know the "legendary" Uncle Pat. He will always be in my heart and in my memories, especially if my boys start "taking me out on the grass."
