Ralph K. Bartholomew, age 76, died on February 1, 2001 at St. John Hospital in Detroit. He was born on December 12, 1924 in Detroit, Michigan, the son of Max and Ada Bartholomew. "Bart" as he was known to everyone, was a funeral director. He graduated from the Wayne State University Department of Mortuary Science. In the year 2000, he retired from the A. H. Peters Funeral Home in Grosse Pointe where he was a supervisor and funeral director. Through the years, he helped thousands of families in their personal hour of grief. He will be remembered for his empathy and compassion. Bart was a former member of the Denby Kiwanis Club and the Masonic Temple. He played the cornet in his high school's marching band, enjoyed boating, science, astrology, wildlife and nature. He was an animal lover. His greatest hobby, however, was gardening. He was known for the gigantic tomatoes he grew year after year to the envy of his neighbors and friends. His secret was hydroponics, which is the cultivation of plants by placing the roots in liquid nutrient solutions. This method was basically unheard of 40 years ago, but he developed a system that worked for him. Bart was the beloved husband of Ann for 34 years. Surviving are their children Keith and Carol. A combined memorial service for Bart and Ann will be held at 6:00 pm on Friday, March 19 at the A. H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack Avenue at Vernier Road, Grosse Pointe Woods. The family will receive friends after 5:00 pm. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Paralyzed Veterans of America, 801 18 Street N.W. Washington, DC 20006
