As a summer resident of Amherstburg, Ontario, Canada, many years were spent enjoying the family cottage on Lake Erie. Dick enjoyed taking relatives and friends for boat rides, fishing, tubing and water skiing. Watching the freighters go by was a favorite hobby. Fresh corn on the cob and fried tomatoes were summertime favorites. After retirement, winters were spent in Florida he made numerous friends at Golfview Golf and Racquet Club. An avid golfer, Dick played round after round with his friends and achieved the difficult hole-in-one three times on his course. He enjoyed swimming at the pool and spent many holidays and birthdays celebrating with friends at the clubhouse. His greatest joy and source of pride was his family. His love for his children was unconditional and he instilled in each of them his diligent work ethic, strong morals and values and most importantly Faith in God. Together with Joan, they put all nine children through 12 years of Catholic education. Moments spent outside of work were centered around his children, teaching them how to build and fix things, making backyard ice rinks every winter, cooking blueberry pancakes and egg in a cup for Saturday breakfast, watching them play sports, taking them camping and building the best bonfires. In addition to spending time with his family, Dick enjoyed watching sports of all kinds on TV, his favorite collegiate teams were Notre Dame and MSU. He cheered on all the Detroit Pro teams, and especially liked the Red Wings. Dick also loved to bird watch, always keeping the feeders full of seed and keeping up on the species, he especially liked hummingbirds and orioles.
