

Rick was the beloved and wonderful husband of Hea-Gyong Jo, PhD and dear brother of Kathleen Nagrant, Alice Elaine McNish, Ronald (Karen) Caldwell, J. Christopher Caldwell and Gregory Caldwell. He was preceded in death by his parents James Gibson Caldwell and Marie Adele Caldwell. He is survived by many loved and loving nephews, nieces, grand nephews and grand nieces.
Rick was born and raised in Detroit where he attended Sacred Heart Seminary and graduated from St. Mary of Redford. Rick was a very proud Veteran of the United States Army. Rick graduated from Wayne State University where he earned his MA in German Comparative Literature and his PhD in English Victorian Literature, and where he taught English Literature and Composition for over 20 years. He was the Director of English Proficiency Examinations for undergraduate students at Wayne State University for three years. He was the International English Editor of the Journal of The American College of Nutrition (JACN). On weekends, he also taught English at the Korean Sae Jong School for second generation Korean American students.
He played excellent guitar and loved music, art, history and the study of languages including German, Greek, Latin and Korean. He was a passionate educator, a sincere scholar, and a devout Catholic. He had a wonderful sense of humor and defiant cheerfulness.
A visitation will be held Wednesday, February 16, 2022, at AH Peters Funeral Home 20705 Mack Avenue, Grosse Pointe Woods, MI 48236 from 2 pm until 8 pm with a service at 7 pm. A funeral mass will be held on Thursday, February 17, 2022 at 10 am at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church 21610 Greater Mack, St. Clair Shores, MI 48080.
Memorial contributions may be made to Crossroads, the Salvation Army, or to the Holocaust Memorial Center in Farmington Hills, to which Rick contributed English editing services for Dr. Guy Stern, at the time the Center was established, or to a charity of your choice.
