Robert M. Hays Jr.

Robert M. Hays Jr. age 79 was born in Edgewood, Pennsylvania on October 26, 1931 to Emily and Robert Hays. He passed away peacefully at his home in Grosse Pointe Farms on September 19, 2011 after a long illness. A long time resident of Grosse Pointe, Mr. Hays attended Grosse Pointe High School, Michigan State University, and earned a Masters degree in American Government from Wayne State University while he was Government Relations Manager for Rockwell International Arvin- Meritor. He was also chairman of the Michigan Manufacturer's Association Government Relations Committee, Chairman of the Great Lakes Government Relations Association and a board Member and Chairman of the Finance Committee of Michigan Youth in Government. He was a member Psi Upsilon Fraternity and belonged to The Lochmoor Club, Otsego Club, Country Club of Lansing and the Ohio University Club. Bob, in addition to playing basketball and running track in high school and college, was an avid over-forty master's runner for thirty years running forty marathons including eight Boston Marathons and four hundred races in his age group and finished either first or in the top three in more than three-quarters of his races. He totaled over 50, 000 miles of running. Bob, also a low handicap golfer, won numerous golf tournaments and was a member of the Michigan Seniors Golf Association, the American Seniors Golf Association, and the United States Golf Association. The family wishes to express their deep gratitude to the Beaumont Hospice Staff for their excellent care of Bob. We are also especially grateful to Bob's caregivers, Lakiesha, Juanita, and Gina for their kind and loving care of Bob. Mr. Hays is survived by his wife of 50 years, Pat (nee Quinn) and their three children; Barbara Hays of Oak Park, IL, Susan Marrs (Vince) of Grosse Pointe Farms, Jeffrey Hays of Chicago, his sister, Susanne Davison of Birmingham, MI; brother in law Bishop John M. Quinn of Winona, MN; and two Grandsons, Andrew and Alexander Marrs. A memorial Service will be held at Grosse Pointe Memorial Church, 16 Lakeshore Road, Grosse Pointe Farms on Friday, October 28, 2011 at 10:00 am.
