Sophia P. Saverino

Sophia Pauline Saverino (nee Martin) passed away on November 28, 2015 at the age of 88. She was born November 11, 1927 in Hamtramck the daughter of Nicolas and Pauline. She grew up in Dearborn where she attended Fordson High School. She married the love of her life Cyril Saverino on January 26, 1946. The couple raised their three children and enjoyed 62 years of marriage until Cy's passing in 2007. The couple enjoyed meeting new people and went on 23 cruises throughout their marriage. After Cy's passing Sophia demonstrated her strength and independence She didn't want to burden her children with things she could easily tackle herself. Sophia was a fun loving woman who enjoyed joking and teasing her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a wonderful cook and enjoyed hot peppers and other spicy foods; she often said that spicy foods are what kept her young. She was always very put together, she wouldn't even think about leaving the house without her hair and eyebrows done and lipstick on. She was a member of the Son's of Columbus, and was very active in the St. Clair Shores Senior Center where she volunteered for 15 years. Sophia is survived by her children Cy (Marie), Teresa (the late James) Coomes, and MaryAnn (the late Barry) Hoey. She was proud of her grandchildren Sally, Steven (Dana), Elizabeth (Mark), Joseph (Sandarella) and the late Susan. And her great-grandchrildren of Stefanie, Brendan, Anna, Katelynn, Emily, Olivia, Andrew, Isabella, Dominic. Visitation for Sophia will be held on Thursday 1:30-9 pm with a prayer service at 7 pm at A.H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack Ave, at Vernier Rd., Grosse Pointe Woods. She will lie in state Friday 9:30 am until time of Mass 10 am at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 21620 Greater Mack, St. Clair Shores. Monsignor G. Michael Bugarin will officiate. Sophia will be interred next to her beloved Cy at Resurrection Cemetery in Clinton Twp., MI.
