Thomas John Sloan, D.D.S., loving husband and father of three, passed away on Friday, January 10, 2025 at the age of seventy. He was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan to Joseph and Anne Sloan. Always an avid learner, he went to grade school at Nativity of Our Lord and St. Peter’s in Harper Woods. He graduated from Notre Dame High School, and in his senior year, he led his chess team to win the Michigan State championship. He then went on to complete a master’s degree in biology at Wayne State University, and graduated from the University Of Detroit School Of Dentistry.
He had a fulfilling career as a dedicated dentist, working in his father’s practice for five years, and then starting his own successful private practice that spanned thirty-eight years. He committed his life to improving smiles and had the unique ability to make anyone smile.
Thomas married the love of his life, Leila, living a life of faith, filled with forty-four wonderful years of love and adventure. Together they raised their three children in a loving home in Grosse Pointe Woods. He was a committed husband who devoted his life to his family.
Thomas achieved the rank of Master in postal chess, maintaining Expert status, and continuing his lifelong passion into retirement. He started the Grosse Pointe Woods Chess Club and a year ago he won first place in the 2023 Michigan Senior Chess Championship. He could always be found studying, teaching, and winning at the game.
He loved music, and over the years he expanded his collection of albums. He was knowledgeable about composers, artists, song writers, and so much more. He shared that information with his patients, entertaining them with his storytelling while he was working. Thomas was a true craftsman, also talented in leather-making and jewelry. He could truly fix anything.
Side by side, Thomas, Leila, and family enjoyed traveling, exploring, and learning about new places and cultures. His memory, laughter, and love lives on through his cherished wife, Leila; Adored children; Laura (Tim), Anthony (Amanda), Maria (Terry), loving siblings; Mary (Joe), John (Margaret), and Jodi; as well as six cherished grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
