Walter Reinhold Pilath, of Shelby Township, passed away peacefully on January 3, 2018. Walter lived a full and adventurous 89 years. He emigrated from Gladbeck, Germany, eventually settling in Detroit, bringing his bride along with him. A machinist by trade, he was a strong, intelligent man who passed on a good work ethic. Enduring WWII, and the loss of many family members and friends, shaped this young man throughout the remainder of his years. Walter enjoyed living on the water. His favorite pastimes included swimming, sailing, kayaking, ice skating, downhill skiing and skydiving. His adventurous spirit would not let him turn down an opportunity to bungy-jump 18 months after a bypass surgery, just to prove he still had it in him. Walter and Rosemarie loved to travel especially to warm and exotic locations. Walter was extremely proud of his children and grandchildren. He truly enjoyed spending time with them, as he lived his life with the spirit of a child, and it showed. He was also a proud lifetime member of the Carpathia Club in Sterling Heights. Walter is survived by his bride of 62 years, Rosemarie, daughters Susanne (Traverse City, MI), and Heidi (Golden, CO), and son Robert (Chesterfield, MI), (Jacqueline), and granddaughters Margaret, (Lansing, MI) and Hannah, and all loving relatives in Germany. Walters family welcomes friends and neighbors to gather and share memories at A.H. Peters Funeral Home, 32000 Schoenherr, Warren, MI 48088, on Sunday from 2-9pm. Funeral Services will be held at the funeral home on Monday at 12 noon, with visitation from 11:30am until the time of service.
