She was born November 10, 1926, in St. Joseph, Missouri, to Toby and Lula Gundling Smith.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 49 years, Jack Kerber Schluep; one brother and his wife, Owen and Rozena Smith; sons-in-law Larry Clarkson and Dan McCray; grandchildren Ben Anfone and Tess Anfone Myers.
Mary was a Mt. Carmel West volunteer for 35 years, starting in 1979. She served in the surgery waiting area and, in later years, the gift shop on Fridays and Sunday afternoons. She cherished the many friendships made as a volunteer there and would jokingly refer to her volunteer days at the hospital as her “therapy days.”
She loved to write and authored many published articles under the heading of “Pardon My Mess.” Her written stories often centered on the numerous challenges and many blessings that came with raising eight children. Mary shared her life story growing up as Mary Smith in a book titled “A Journey Back” that was gifted to each of her children in 1992. Mary included a “final word” in the hard-bound copies given at Christmas time in 1992: “One of the best parts about writing a story about ourselves is that it gives us a chance to relive our past,” she wrote. “It also reminds us of who we are. With time and change, we tend to forget that.” The legacy of Mary Schluep will not easily be forgotten as it lives on through her family.
She is survived by four daughters and four sons: Linda (John) Nicholson of Galena, John (Beth) Schluep of Silver Lake, Thomas Schluep of Greenfield, Marianne (Eric) Wohlford of Columbus, IN, Gary (Mary Lou) Schluep of Washington Court House, Rick (Tonia McLanahan) Schluep of Greenfield, Jane Schluep of Grove City, and Suzanne (Bobby) Manley of Circleville.
Also surviving are her beloved grandchildren Aaron (Kelly Mosbacher) Schluep, Beau (Annie) Schluep, Sarah Schluep, Jonathan D. (Breanna) Wohlford, Michael David (Catherine) Wohlford, Mark Alan (Christi) Wohlford, Amanda Foy, Jason Schluep, Ronnie Anfone, Caleb McLanahan Schluep (Sarah), Michael Reece McLanahan Schluep, Alicia Marie (Joshua) Furr, Matthew (Corina) Clarkson, Kimberly Sue Clarkson, and Sean (Lori) Clarkson; 22 great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren; special nephews Greg and Paul Smith, and David and Chris Schluep; and a half-brother and his wife, Larry (Mary) Smith.
In lieu of flowers, Mary’s desire was that donations be given to a charity of your choice. Especially close to Mary’s heart was support for impoverished children. She was an active supporter of Compassion International and St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 23, 2025 from 11-1 pm at Schoedinger Grove City 4242 Hoover Rd. with the funeral service beginning at 1 pm. Interment will be at Sunset Cemetery.
