Born in Dauphin, Manitoba, Barry grew up in Fort Garry and was a true athlete and competitor. He was proudly inducted into the Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame, a testament to his talent and dedication to the sport. Over the years, he remained active and passionate about athletics, enjoying golf, curling, and pickleball at the Guelph Country Club—a place that became especially meaningful to Barry and his family after settling in Guelph in the 1970s.
Barry built a successful career as an accountant, where he was known for his exceptional ability with numbers and his steady, thoughtful approach to his work.
A man of few words, Barry had a quiet presence, but when he spoke, his words were always either meaningful or delivered with a sharp and memorable sense of humour.
He will be deeply missed by his loving wife, Jo Ann Hayter, and his children, Lisa Marko, Hali Ruhl (Andrew Gallagher), Cindy Marko, and Trevor Marko (Holly Marko). He was a proud grandfather to Laura and David McLean, and Ainslie and Kendra Ruhl. He will also be fondly remembered by his former wife, and mother of his children, Barbara Waugh (Don Stevely).
He will also be lovingly remembered by Jo Ann’s children, Devon and Simon (Liz), and grandchild Fox, as well as Jo Ann’s sisters, Pegi and Victoria, and brother-in-law, Peeter.
A celebration of life will be held at the Guelph Country Club, 133 Woodlawn Rd E, Guelph, on May 14th from 2:00–5:00 p.m. with speeches at 2:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Make-A-Wish Canada or Keep Kids Fed at Home. Donations and condolences can be made on Barry's memorial page.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Ruddock and the palliative care team for their exceptional care and compassion, Dr. Li, and the many caregivers at Guelph General Hospital.
He will be remembered for a life well lived, both on and off the course.
