While on an enjoyable month-long retirement holiday with her husband Scott, Janet passed away suddenly in Seville, Spain, mere days before her 68th birthday, and left all who heard the news immediately shocked and heartbroken.
Janet spent an idyllic childhood with her parents Elide (nee Damaren) and Fred Prior in their Edinburgh Rd home. She grew up alongside her four siblings, Pat, Fred (Diane), David, and Mary-Ann (Allan) and as the family grew to include spouses, children, and grandchildren, they remained exceptionally close-knit. Descending from two large families, the walls of that family home were always filled with people, their joy, and a lifetime of memories were made.
Janet’s eye-catching smile, and vibrant, kind personality lit up every room she entered. In the halls of Bishop Macdonell, Class of ’76, Janet developed friendships that were still thriving and cherished until the day she passed; they were her forever friends.
In May of 1979, Janet married the love of her life, Scott Roberts. They were also days away from celebrating their 47th wedding anniversary when Janet passed. Their love story was made up of many chapters, traveling being a common theme throughout them all. Their love-filled home was always open to family and friends, where Janet’s top-notch hosting skills were always on full display.
They welcomed two daughters into their love story, Carlie in 1983 and then Kirstie in 1986. Janet was the most loving and doting mother, unwavering in her support and forever championing her children in every aspect of life. She was the most fiercely proud mum of all their accomplishments and shared their joys with anyone she met. The girls were blessed to have her be present in the milestones of their life, including their weddings. She welcomed Jeremy and Marty into the family as if they were her own sons. For all of them, the chapters still to be written will always be missing something — Janet.
The families’ story was marked with travelling; sporting events the girls had, or Christmas Holidays spent down south, all looked on now with memories of ‘how lucky we were for those times.’ Janet always boasted about her time as a Girl Guide leader, and those skills remained a tangible thread in her life, none more evident than when she was preparing and packing for a family vacation. Whether for an unexpected detour, a scraped knee, or a forgotten necessity, Janet was always prepared - the human equivalent of a Swiss Army knife, equal parts practical wisdom and care.
She was a realist, a dreamer, and a successful entrepreneur. Janet and Scott owned their business for 27 years, and very recently had retired. At the heart of their business was always family; family first, family always. Janet and Scott had only just entered retirement, with so many beautiful plans for the years ahead, a season of life now cut painfully short.
In 2017, and again in 2019, the centre of Janet’s world shifted with the birth of her grandsons, Noah and Max. Those little boys were the light of her life, and their bond was beyond special to even put into words. She was proud to be a mother, but the pride she had in being a Nonna was remarkable. While they are still young, everyone will do everything they can to continue her legacy through them and always keep her memory bright as a beacon forward to the future.
With the loss of Janet, the chapters ahead feel forever touched by the absence of someone deeply loved, and a future without her almost impossible to imagine.
