She was born in Penobsquis, N.B., attended grade school there, and later graduated from Sussex High School in 1946, and Business College the following year. She was employed with the T. Eaton Company in Moncton for 17 years and later in the offices of the Dorchester Penitentiary.
After her marriage to Walter R. Mitchell in 1964, she moved to Dorchester, N.B. where she made her home until moving to Ontario in September 1993. Twice married, her first husband died in 1971 and her second husband, Linwood E Hamilton died in 1988, three months after they were married. She was predeceased by her Mother Alice Whitenect and two brothers, Roy and Lawrence.
Jean was an adherent of Northside Community Church in Kitchener, Ontario and during her years in Dorchester was an active member first of the United Church and later the First United Baptist Church of which she was also a member.
She was a devoted wife and mother and will be sadly missed by her son Robert Mitchell of Guelph along with her Daughter in Law Colleen Kowaleski, and her Grandsons Logan and Landon whom she adored seeing every Sunday. Her pride in her family was always evident and often unbearable as she insisted on talking about Robbie to everyone she met.
But her pride was only surpassed by her vanity. Even on her worst days of pain, she insisted on having her hair and nails done "because someone might see me!" She always smiled no matter how bad she felt and always saw the best in everyone and every situation.
With few relatives, her friends served as her extended family and she will be remembered as a dear friend who was always there to share their joys and sorrows. She loved people and made friends wherever she went – as long as they didn't mind her talking.
Jean's remains were entrusted to Gilbert MacIntyre & Son Funeral Home in Guelph. At this time there will not be a service or visiting hours but a celebration of life will be scheduled post Covid. Jean's ashes will be taken to New Brunswick to be interned beside Walter and Linwood in the Dorchester Rural Cemetery.
A sincere thank you to the staff of St. Joseph's Health Centre for their loving kindness and professional and personal care of Jean. A special thank you to Bana and Glace.
Jean would love it if you would listen to one of her old favorite hymns like How Great Thou Art, In the Garden, The Lord is My Shephard, or It Will be Worth it all when I see Jesus.
In lieu of flowers or donations – the family asks that you buy flowers for your mom, or take your kids out for Swiss Chalet and a Magnum ice cream bar – two of Jean's favorites.
