

LAWRENCE, JOHN HAGUE: B.A., M.S.W. 1936-2010 - John passed away peacefully with Bev at his side on Sunday, July 11 at Hospice Wellington in Guelph in his 75th year. John will be greatly missed by his sister Judy (Ted) Gooderham, of Hockley Valley, his loving partner Beverley Murray of Kitchener and numerous nieces, nephews and a large number of friends. John was predeceased by his parents Laverne and Olive (nee Hague) Lawrence of Toronto and by his wife Anne (1999) and his brother Brian Lawrence (2006). John was an alumnus of the University of Toronto where he earned a B.A. at Trinity College followed by his M.S.W. at the School of Social Work. He spent his career with Correctional Services Canada (Parole) where he had been the project chair of a committee representing the National Parole Board, Correctional Services of Canada and the Solicitor-General's Secretariat which was responsible for setting the standards for the supervision of conditionally released inmates – the first in the English speaking world- in 1992. Volunteer work during his working and retirement years included Guelph Museums, reading assistant with children in elementary schools in Guelph, teaching at Action Read where he established a continuing close friendship with Victor Kastner, board member of the Guelph Historical Society and former warden of St. George's Anglican Church. He was a regular contributor to Letters to the Editor of the Guelph Mercury in which he loved to correct follies that had come to pass. A Memorial Service and Reception will be held on Saturday, September 11, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at St. James Anglican Church, Guelph. Inurnment to follow at Marymount Cemetery, Guelph. The wonderful care that John received from Hospice Wellington was greatly appreciated. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Anne Lawrence Memorial Scholarship, Glenview Park Secondary School c/o Waterloo Region District School Board (51 Ardelt Ave, Kitchener N2C 2R5), St. James Anglican Church (80 Glasgow St. N, Guelph N1H 4W2) or to the Guelph Museums (6 Dublin St S, Guelph N1H 4L5) would be appreciated.
