It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Lucio (Luke) Scapin on February 22, 2024 at the Guelph General Hospital in his 84th year. Beloved husband for 57 years to Mirella Scapin. Loving father to Shawn Scapin and Melissa Kirkpatrick (Alan). Proud Nonno to Sarah (Ricardo) and Lia (Levi). Predeceased by his three brothers: Florindo, Ricardo and Vittorio. Lucio will be missed by his many nieces and nephews and by the Cechetto family, especially Renza Cecchetto who loved him deeply and helped care for him after his accident in July 2023. Alan (son-in-law) did so much to help Lucio. Alan considered him a second dad and Lucio loved him dearly.
Lucio was born in Italy and sadly lost his beloved mother Antonia in his early 20's. He began his carpentry training in Italy and then moved to Germany to further his training. This was the beginning of a very successful career as a gifted carpenter and craftsman. Lucio was the proud owner of Luke's Carpentry Shop. Lucio moved to Canada in 1961 when he was 21. He worked at a variety of jobs until he opened his first carpentry shop in 1965. Lucio loved his work and continued to work until he broke his hip in July 2023. His work was his passion.
Lucio loved to dance. He was also very happy to sit in his garden for hours and greet anyone who walked by. Everyone got offered a glass of wine. Lucio was a very kind, friendly, generous person. Lucio was extremely proud of his children and grandchildren. He shared many happy occasions with them. Lucio loved dogs. His beloved Princess passed away years ago. Denver (his dog) would wait for his dad at the bottom of the stairs. He is still waiting.
Lucio passed peacefully with his family by his side. He was never alone while in hospital for three days. His wife Mirella spent every night with him. Lucio fought the good fight until he took his last breath.
A special thank you to the wonderfully caring nurses on Six Floor West. They took excellent care of Lucio and treated him with compassion and respect. A very special thank you to Dr. Mendonca, Lucio's family physician, a remarkably caring man.
