She is lovingly survived by her brothers Aldo (Diane) Carere and David (Mary) Carere and her sister Elena (Lance) Greggain as well as her nieces and nephews who adored her deeply and brought her endless joy, Luc, Aaron, Natalie, Jaclyn, David, Julia, Eric, Marc, Adam, Jack and Max.
Lucy lived with her brother Frank Carere for many years, sharing a close and devoted bond with him until his passing. Their life together was an important and grounding part of Lucy’s story.
Lucy lived her life entirely on her own terms. She had an open heart, a strong will and an unwavering commitment to independence. She knew how to advocate for herself and did so with confidence and determination. As the baby of the family and one of the youngest in the extended family, Lucy was especially cherished and deeply loved.
She was known for staying connected, calling often, sometimes relentlessly. Lucy almost always had a knitting or craft project on the go, thoughtfully creating something special for every new baby who arrived in the family and within her wider circle of friends.
Lucy shared a remarkable and enduring friendship with Becky, her best friend since high school. Their bond was deep and intimate, supporting one another through all of life’s ups and downs with loyalty, honesty and love.
Her cousins played an especially important role throughout her life answering her calls, visiting her and ensuring she was included in every family celebration. That sense of belonging meant everything to Lucy.
Lucy will be remembered for her beautiful smile and her remarkable ability to endure without complaint. Despite lifelong challenges, she rarely focused on what was difficult, meeting life with resilience and quiet strength but Lucy will also be remembered for her ability to challenge the patience of those who loved her with her strong opinions and confident expectations.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the nurses and staff at St. Joseph’s Long-Term Care, whose attentiveness, kindness and compassion never wavered. The entire long-term care community treated Lucy with dignity and genuine care, for which we are profoundly thankful.
We also wish to acknowledge the community of Guelph, which embraced Lucy, fully supporting her, including her, and surrounding her with love throughout her life.
