SORBARA, Mary Gertrude Passed away peacefully at the Village of Riverside Glen, Guelph, on Saturday, August 1, 2015. Mary (nee Peddigrew) Sorbara, 87 years old, was the beloved and devoted wife of the late Dominic (Manny) Sorbara (August 31, 2005). She was the loving mother of Sam (Judy) Sorbara, Jim (Beverley) Sorbara and Bill (Nguyet) Sorbara. Predeceased by her daughter, Michelle Mazziotti (1998) and all five of her brothers, Leo (Mary) Peddigrew, Cecil (aka Jeff) (Viola) Peddigrew, Bill (Josephine) Peddigrew, Joe (Lillian) Peddigrew and Gerard (aka Shorty) (Irene) Peddigrew. Also predeceased by her grandson, Dominic Sorbara (1981). Loved grandmother of Amanda (Mark), Angela (Calvin), Joe (Jill), Michael (Tala), Jennifer (Thomas), Angelo (Tanya), Adam, Andrew, Tung (Mimi) and Stephen (Jenny). Proud great-grandmother of Adrianna, Dominic, Mya, Victoria, Reine, Nico, Emilie, Charlotte, Joshua, Gemma, Kayla, Christa, Cynthia and Jacob. Mary was a happy person with an infectious sense of humour and being with her always left you feeling cheerful and restored. She was born and raised in St. John’s, Newfoundland and was a proud Newfoundlander. Some were fortunate to accompany Mary back to St. John’s when she returned a number of times to visit her dear friend, the late Margorie Baetzel. Those adventures were life-altering experiences for those fortunate enough to participate. Between visits to St. John’s in the summer and spending time in Siesta Key, Sarasota, during the winter, Mary never had a prolonged absence from the ocean which she loved. Like her father before her, Mary was visited by dementia prematurely but proved to be too resilient a foe and the ravages of the affliction were rebuffed. For over 10 years dementia made Mary even more adorable, lovable and a sheer delight to be around. If there is a way to take that insidious disease in stride, Mary found it. Gratitude is extended to the staff at Riverside Glen for the care and attention they provided to Mary during her many years at Riverside Glen. Many of them were beguiled by her warmth and affability and became her friend. We have no doubt that they will now find the memory care floor to be a much lonelier place. A special thank you to Juanita Harrison who kept a close eye on Mary over the past 10 years and was a tireless advocate on her behalf. Life was better for Mary because of Juanita. Finally, Mary’s family would like to thank Doctor David Hood for all of his efforts, particularly near the end when the disease was getting the better of Mary. It’s hard to imagine a more attentive and responsive doctor. Friends are invited to meet with the family at the Gilbert MacIntrye & Son Funeral Home, Dublin Chapel, 252 Dublin St. N., on Thursday August 6, 2015 from 2–5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. A Vigil for Mary will be held at the funeral home on Thursday at 2 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Church, 98 Alice St., Guelph on Friday August 7, 2015 at 10 a.m. Interment at Our Lady Immaculate Mausoleum, Marymount Cemetery, Guelph.
