Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful Beautiful boy” John Lennon
We’ve lost our beautiful boy William Jonathan Steadman Medeiros. Beloved son of Paul Medeiros and Laura Coulman, first born brother and secret society of sibling mischief companion of Adam and Tess (the love and admiration always went both ways. Well, most of the time). Cherished, cherished grandson of Donald and Judy Coulman, and Maria and Paulino de Medeiros. Much loved by Aunts and Uncles, Lisa Coulman, Jonathan Coulman, Nancy Fleet, Geza Tormasi, Karen Booth, and Jeff Fleet. Adored by cousins Dustin Fleet, Isabelle Tormasi, Sergei Tormasi, Skylar Fleet, Maddy Coulman, and wild little Ted Coulman. Always astounding to the wonderful and vast family and friends who celebrated Willy as the first (and unexpected) arrival to make Laura and Paul a family in 1997. We thank Maddie, Connor, Matt, Jonathan, Randy, Jill, David, Jenn and everyone at Rainbow Day Camp, Our Lady of Lourdes (Fire it up Mac!), Tschirhart’s “winning” wrestling team, Sealy Karate, University of Waterloo, Kathy Dougan, daddy’s construction of ridiculous flotation devices made out of winter-stockpiled laundry detergent bottles for the short-termed annual tradition of camping at the Pinery, raucous celebrations at the cottage (and his honorary membership in the Knowles Lane Diving Club aka the KLDC), for making Will so precisely and gloriously Will. We knew Will was awesome at birth – his first word was “ball” after all; but, as somewhat mediocre parents at best, we were flabbergasted by his abundant achievements and recognitions that way, way outreached his genetics in this short but extraordinarily rich life. For most of primary school, he aspired to be a rabbit (and developed a self-induced twitch as preparation). His timing was rarely off. He knew just when to lighten the mood by tattling on Bubba, (schmoozing Granny or charming Vovo and Vuvu); by sharing a delightfully amusing anecdote from his privileged (exhausting) day of working with the kooky kids at Rainbow; or, by finding it necessary to remind mum that it is International Women’s Day. He was a first-degree Black Belt in Karate, a wrestler, a retired tennis student, a failed gardener who never quite got that message, a lauded albeit curious choice for a role in the musical production Guys and Dolls, and a fair-weather cross country runner. He travelled with the robotics team to St. Louis Missouri and North Bay (where the team commandeered the banquet hall of a post-prime luxury hotel for the city’s unofficial largest nerf-gun fight in history). His year as School Trustee for the Wellington Catholic District School Board 2014-2015 had him sporting a fabulous blazer, meeting many mentors, impressing everyone, and making important changes to school policy including the introduction of gender-neutral bathrooms (… his regret was not getting the shorts approved for uniform). He was recognized as Most Outstanding Student, 2015; and, especially pleasing for his dad, was granted the “lunch-ladies” scholarship upon graduation from Lourdes. His successes continued into his first year at Waterloo, where, first, he found love (Maddie, and his very special friends at REV); and then he discovered good study habits. In the Arts and Business (B.A), Political Science co-op programme, he was thrilled with his first few weeks with the Ontario Ministry of International Trade, raving to us that he got to peek into Kathleen’s office thanks to the thoughtful guard, and that he was working in the building where Suits was filmed. His aspirations having evolved from rabbit; he was hoping to become a lawyer. It was already beginning with his placing second in the 2016 C.L.A.U.S.E. Undergraduate Mock Trials Canada competition. Everyone who knows Will is devastated. He will always be our beautiful boy.
